Future Nurse Standards 2026

NMC CBT Syllabus Guide

Understand exactly what you will be tested on. A complete breakdown of the 115-question Test of Competence structure, covering both Numeracy and Clinical scenarios.

The Test of Competence (ToC) is split into two distinct parts, mapped to the NMC's Future Nurse standards. You must pass both sections to proceed with your UK registration.

Part A: Numeracy (15 Questions)

This section tests your ability to perform applied drug calculations safely. The questions are straightforward but require precision. You must achieve a 100% pass mark in this section.

  • Metric conversions (mcg, mg, g)
  • Oral drug dosages
  • Injection volumes
  • Intravenous (IV) drip rates
  • Fluid balance calculations
  • Weight-based dosages

Part B: Clinical (100 Questions)

The clinical section is entirely multiple-choice (four options, one correct answer). It evaluates your theoretical knowledge and how you apply it to clinical scenarios in a UK healthcare setting.

Core Domains Tested:

1. Professional Values & Safeguarding

NMC Code of Conduct, raising concerns (whistleblowing), consent, mental capacity, and safeguarding vulnerable adults and children.

2. Infection Prevention & Control (IPC)

Aseptic non-touch technique (ANTT), isolation protocols, PPE, and proper disposal of clinical waste.

3. Nursing Procedures & Patient Assessment

A-E assessment, NEWS2 scoring, interpreting blood results, basic life support (BLS), and managing common emergencies.

4. Medicines Management

Safe administration of medicines, understanding common side effects, allergies, and legal frameworks surrounding controlled drugs.
